What an incredible day at the Festival of Nuneaton!
We were so proud to attend as CalmHaus and have the opportunity to meet so many wonderful people from our local community. Events like this are so important to us because they give us the chance to step outside of our usual spaces, have real conversations, listen to people’s experiences and, most importantly, remind people that they are not alone.
Throughout the day, we met lots of neurodivergent people who were looking for help, support, understanding and somewhere to turn. Hearing people openly share their experiences reminded us exactly why the work we do at CalmHaus matters.
Breaking the silence around late-diagnosed ADHD in women
One of the conversations particularly close to our hearts was around late-diagnosed ADHD in women.
More and more women are now seeking an ADHD assessment later in life, often after years of feeling that something wasn’t quite right but never having the words or understanding to explain why.
For many women, the journey to diagnosis can come after years of masking, adapting and suffering in silence.
We’ve become incredibly good at appearing as though we have everything together.
We manage our careers.
We care for our families.
We meet expectations.
We organise everyone else.
We push through exhaustion.
And we often become experts at hiding the things we find difficult.
But behind that mask can be years of overwhelm, anxiety, burnout, low self-esteem and the feeling that everyone else seems to have received a manual for life that we somehow missed.
For many women, discovering ADHD later in life can be both incredibly validating and incredibly emotional. It can provide answers to questions they’ve been asking themselves for years.
“Why can’t I just be organised?”
“Why do simple things feel so difficult?”
“Why am I constantly overwhelmed?”
“Why can everyone else seem to manage this?”
These are conversations that deserve to be heard without judgement.
Taking the conversation to the airwaves
We were also incredibly grateful for the opportunity to take these conversations beyond the festival and onto the radio.
We had the chance to speak with Heart Radio, Smooth FM and Capital FM Midlands, discussing neurodiversity, ADHD and the experiences of women who are seeking answers later in life.
Being able to talk about these subjects publicly is something we’re incredibly passionate about. The more we talk, the more we normalise conversations around neurodiversity and the more people may feel able to reach out for the support they need.
Sometimes, simply hearing someone say “I’ve experienced that too” can make a huge difference.
A community that listens
The Festival of Nuneaton reminded us that there is such a strong need for accessible, understanding and supportive spaces within our communities.
We loved meeting people, hearing their stories, answering questions and connecting with individuals who may have felt misunderstood for a long time.
Our message is simple:
You don’t have to struggle in silence.
Whether you’re questioning whether you may be neurodivergent, supporting a family member, navigating a diagnosis or simply trying to understand yourself a little better, there are people and organisations out there who want to listen.
And we’re incredibly proud to be part of that conversation.
